VERDURE WITH BIRDS IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE Aubusson tapestry cartoon, France circa 1870
Oil on canvas.
These paintings are used as the working drawings for the weavers of the tapestries in Aubusson. During weaving they are placed under the warp threads and the wooden spools with the silks and wools are dropped onjto the surface of the paint,
this obviously damages the paint and depending on how many times they were used as models the greater the wear to the painted surface. They do however show the original colours intended and are always life size.
This painting has had conservation treatment, has been wax lined and ready to go onto a stretcher. Very minimal re-touching has taken place but more could be done.
HEIGHT: 92½" (235 cm)
WIDTH: 50" (127 cm)
