“POMONA” EARLY 18TH CENTURY PORTRAIT, FRENCH SCHOOL
Oil on canvas in fine quality later gilt frame.
Allegorical figure of Pomona goddess of fruitful abundance in ancient Roman mythology, The pruning knife seen lying beside the basket of fruit was said to be her attribute.
Shown in a state of semi un-dress leaning on a stone parapet with a basket of fruit with a pruning knife in her hand. Her name comes from the Latin word pomum, "fruit," specifically orchard fruit.

Re-lined, cleaned and restored, on original stretcher. The later water gilt frame is 19th century with incising and raised decoration and has had minor restoration to the top right hand corner.

The painting and frame are in excellent condition.
