EARLY 18TH CENTURY FLEMISH TAPESTRY “CUPID & PSYCHE”

Mythological tapestry showing Cupid and Psyche framed by large trees in front of a landscape with a large house to the left.
Surrounded by a decorative border of flowers and fruit.

Taken from the legend of Psyche and Cupid the story tells how Psyche the most beautiful daughter of a king is rumoured to be the daughter of Venus and a mortal. This has offended Venus and she commissions Cupid to take her revenge. However Cupid falls in love with Psyche and decides to posses her for himself. Psyche has two sisters already married and her father fearing that the gods are offended decides to consult the oracle to find out why his youngest daughter remains unwed. He is told that he may not expect a human son in law rather a monster feared even by Jupiter. Psyche is carried away to her future by Zephyr the west wind where she finds herself in a magnificent house where every night her unknown husband visits her. She gradually looks forward to these nightly visits and soon becomes pregnant.

Her family long for news of her and Cupid, still unknown to his bride allows Zephyr to carry her sisters up to her for a visit. When they see the splendour in which Psyche lives, they become envious, and undermine her happiness by prodding her to uncover her husband's true identity, since surely as foretold by the oracle she was lying with the vile winged serpent, who would devour her and her child.

One night after Cupid falls asleep, Psyche carries out the plan her sisters devise, she brings out a dagger and a lamp she had hidden in the room, in order to see and kill the monster. But when the light instead reveals the most beautiful creature she has ever seen, she is so startled that she wounds herself on one of the arrows in Cupid's cast-aside quiver. Struck with a feverish passion, she spills hot oil from the lamp and wakes him. He flees, and though she tries to pursue, he flies away and leaves her on the bank of a river.

Woven in wool and silk and backed in linen. In good condition with repairs to the bottom left corner.
