LATE 17TH CENTURY AUBUSSON TAPESTRY
‘VERDURE AU DROMADAIRE’ SIGNED IN THE BORDER
Finely woven tapestry with a camel standing under an exotic fruit tree beside a river. Opposite, a parrot sits in an oak tree whilst a heron stands looking into the river. Rich oversized plants and flowers in the foreground with a walled town in the background overlooked by a chateau in the hills above. These fantastical wooded scenes with birds and animals are classic images dreamt up by the painters who worked for the tapestry industry in central France in the 17th century.
The whole is framed by a rich border with lambrequins, fruit, flowers and blue ribbons retaining the original outer blue border with the signature to the bottom right hand side.
The tapestry is finely woven in wool and silk. It has been cleaned, restored and re-backed
