Moustiers situated in the ‘Base-Alpes’ in Southern France was recognised as manufacturers of fine quality faïence from 1679, when Pierre Clérissay installed the first kilns. The whimsical designs incorporating birds, animals, grotesques, rinceaux, cartouches and a profusion of foliage and flowers distinguish pieces made, all with an incredible charm. Producing plates, serving platters, wine coolers, jugs and other decorative pieces. In yellows, blues, greens and polychrome. From 1755 competition from abroad, the French Revolution, and social changes, all effected the viability of the business. Moustiers remains one of the most remarkable manufacturers of fine faïence during the 18th century in France.
