François DUCHATEL was Flemish painter about whom very little is known. Probably born in Brussels between 1616 and 1625, he reportedly served in the cavalry , starting his career as a painter at the age of 27. It is traditionally believed that he was a pupil of David Teniers the Younger. In 1649 he married Jeanne Louys with whom he had seven children. Their eldest daughter Marie Duchatel or Marie Du Chastel (1652 – 1692) became a portrait painter and miniaturist who had an international career.
